KanjiTalk (漢字Talk or かんじトーク) is a localized version of the Macintosh operating system, developed by Apple Computer for the Japanese market. It uses an input method called Kotoeri to support Japanese characters in Macintosh computers that were sold in Japan at the time the Pippin platform was launched in 1996.
Japanese Pippin OS[]
Japanese Pippin prototypes could boot a beta version of KanjiTalk 7.5.2b3 (or a corresponding English version of Mac OS 7.5.2a3) with System Enabler 1.0b3.[1][2][3] "Pippinized" CD-ROMs published in Japan for the Pippin Atmark console contained a Pippin OS folder based on KanjiTalk 7.5.2 with System Enabler 1.1.[4]
Support for displaying Japanese and Kanji characters added about 1MB to system memory requirements, 1.5MB if Japanese text input is needed, forcing some developers to strip features or require a memory upgrade.[5] Some Pippin titles, such as EGWORD Pure and Internet Kit 2.0, used EGBRIDGE as a Japanese input method instead of Kotoeri from KanjiTalk.[6][7]
KanjiTalk and Mac[]
The Japanese version of the Macintosh Plus is observed to have included KanjiTalk fonts in its ROM, reducing RAM required for operation.[8]
Apple eventually replaced KanjiTalk with WorldScript in Mac OS 8.[9] WorldScript was later replaced by Unicode support in Mac OS X.[10]
