J-DATA (ジェイデータ) is a Japanese company that offered internet services for the Pippin platform.[1]
History[]
J-DATA was founded in Kyoto, Japan in February 1991.[2]
This version of WebViewer was bundled with J-DATA's software.
J-DATA's software was bundled with Microsoft Internet Explorer 3.0 and NetCruiser 3.0 on WebViewer, a "Pippinized" CD-ROM that was released in Japan in 1997.[1] From 1997 to 1999, J-DATA's website offered a Pippin Atmark console with 33.6 kbps modem, wireless AppleJack controller, a "Super Cat" (「スーパーキャット」) barcode reader, and a subscription to J.D.Press magazine, in a rental package for a monthly fee of JP¥ 6,800. The magazine offered listings of 300 websites every month that could be scanned through the barcode reader with J-DATA's software to avoid manually entering the URL.[3][4] J-DATA published 17 issues of the magazine through August 26, 1997.[5] A Homepage Guide (ホームページガイド) with URLs and barcodes for 1000 websites was also published in April 1997 for subscribers.[6]
With the cancellation of the Pippin platform in March 1998,[7] J-DATA was involved in the liquidation of Pippin titles and accessories in Japan.[8] By January 2000, second-hand Pippin consoles bundled with a 14.4 kbps modem and choice of 10 different software titles were being blown out for as low as JP¥ 10,000.[9]
